The Art of Kantha

The Art of Kantha

There's something rather magical about Kantha.

At first glance, it might just look like a colourful quilt or throw. But look a little closer and you'll find layers of history stitched into every piece. Tiny hand-sewn running stitches travel across the fabric like little pathways, connecting together fragments of vintage cotton saris that have already lived long and interesting lives.

Kantha originated in India centuries ago, born from necessity rather than fashion. Women would carefully layer worn saris and cloth together, stitching them by hand to create blankets, quilts and coverings for their families. Nothing was wasted. What could no longer be worn was transformed into something new.

That spirit of resourcefulness is one of the things I love most about Kantha.

Each piece carries traces of its previous life. A faded floral print sits beside a vibrant stripe. A carefully repaired patch tells the story of a fabric that was too loved to throw away. You might find areas softened by decades of washing, tiny imperfections, hand repairs or signs of wear. For me, these aren't flaws. They're the very things that make Kantha beautiful.

No two pieces are ever the same.

When I'm sourcing Kantha textiles, I'm not looking for perfection. I'm looking for character. The throws that stop me in my tracks are often the ones with unexpected colour combinations, charming repairs or a feeling that's impossible to explain but impossible to ignore.

It's a little like collecting stories.

Some Kanthas are bright and joyful. Others are faded and quiet. Some have thousands upon thousands of tiny stitches that must have taken weeks to complete. Every one has passed through many hands before finding its way here.

In a world of mass production, Kantha feels wonderfully human.

The stitching isn't perfectly uniform. The colours don't always match. The edges can be uneven. But that's exactly the point. Every piece reflects the person who made it and the life it has already lived.

I often say that Kantha textiles get better with age, much like many of us. The more they're used, washed, loved and repaired, the softer and more beautiful they become.

Whether draped over a bed, thrown across a sofa, wrapped around your shoulders on a cool evening or transformed into one of my jackets, Kantha brings warmth, colour and history into a home in a way that very few textiles can.

Just like us, every one is completely unique.

And that's the art of Kantha x
