Antique Gujarati Painted Stone Guardian Lion
Product details
Description
A wonderfully characterful hand-carved stone guardian lion from Gujarat, India. With his expressive, almost human face, boldly carved mane and remnants of colourful painted decoration, he is a beautiful example of Indian folk art.
Guardian lions such as this would traditionally have stood at the entrance to a home or gateway, often as part of a pair, symbolising strength and offering protection from unwanted visitors.
Believed to date from the 19th century, he has developed a beautifully weathered surface and patina over many years.
